You can setup a VPN over SSH on Mac OS X. You can configure a VPN tun interface to drop all its traffic into a listening tcp port which is port-forwarded to a remote ssh gateway. However, you are looking at a lot of redundant encryption and processing without corresponding increase in your security profile.

To make it easy, run openvpn on your home wifi router and terminate a VPN tunnel on it from your mac laptop. You need to have the router flashed with firmware that supports openvpn, for example - DD-WRT.

As per average online users there are several online risks. Whn one visits the website it keeps logs of your browsing history saved on their servers. There is no rocket science to know that its not safe out there in the online world. Your privacy and data is vulnerable to be snooped into if you are not using online protection. To stay protected online, people online are increasingly picking up online protection tools like proxy servers, anti-virus software and PC-based firewalls. Although what they are doing is wrong it not meant to protect your online activity, such tools are effective only for protecting data parked inside your system. Before you begin, please make sure that:

You have a working internet connection
    Mac Supported Device.
A Premium VPN account ( I would suggest you to use PureVPN and in example i will use PureVPN setup guide)

1 Navigate to Apple Icon, click it and select “System Preferences”

    2 Go to Network

3 Click on 'plus' icon to create a new service

    4 Insert the following info:

From Interface drop down menu select “VPN”
From VPN Type drop down menu select IKEv2
Insert desired Service Name as PureVPN IKEv2, PureVPN US IKEV2, PureVPN DE IKEV2 etc
    Click on Create

    5 Insert the following info:

Insert desired server address in Server Address box. Click here to get the list of servers
    Under Remote ID: Insert
    Leave Local ID: Empty
Check “Show VPN status on Menu bar.”
    Click on “Authentication Settings.

6 Go to the Authentication Settings and keep Username selected from drop down menu.

Username: Insert Username provided by PureVPN
Password: Insert Password provided by PureVPN
    Click on OK

7 Click on Apply then click on VPN Status Icon from Menu bar

    8 Select “Show Time Connected”

9 Click on Connect and VPN connection will establish in few seconds.

10 VPN has been connected Sucessfully

If you see Status Connecting… and Connect button turn to Disconnect that means VPN has been connected. Due to glitch Status doesn’t show connected. Simply click on your Lan / Wifi connection then click back on IKEv2 VPN connection and status will change.

VPN is available on Mac OS X by default and is simply hidden in the client version. It is possible to run it from the command line, but if you don't want to mess with that, you can use iVPN: it's free and provide a GUI to set up your VPN.
